It's evaluation time. I know there are one or two pieces of unfinished business with one or two of the modules (voice thread in particular) but basically I have completed this online course and learned much in the process. Here are some of my thoughts. Since so many students dropped out it was hard to communicate with fellow class members on a regular basis. Also, since I chose to work ahead since I knew the end of the semester would be crazy because of our new master's program, I put myself out of the loop. Since we will all be teaching blended courses I think it would have been helpful to meet face to face at least once every other module. I believe many of us struggled with the same issues and could have learned from each other and from Rick's extensive knowledge in technology. When this course is taught again, this would be valuable to add (and I would probably elect to join some of these person to person sessions. Regarding the evaluation of my own work...I know I put in MANY hours of thoughtful time and energy and learned much in the process. In addition I actually worked on two rather than just one course so that should give me a few extra points. The courses are also very different, one lasting 15 weeks and the second 3 weeks, two days per week. Both required very different ways of adding technology but yet both used some of my favorite new technologies such as using an avatar to introduce myself and weekly online quizzes. In summary, this was a worthwhile and productive class and one I believe we should all be held accountable for doing, and doing well. Kudos to fellow classmates who completed it...Becca, Irene and Derrick.

Patti, you're right that it's hard to get the communication going and make it worthwhile when there are such varying levels of participation. Of course for your own class you can actually evaluate your students based on their participation and contributions.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely take your advice about having some in-person meetings into consideration. I think that is a good idea and may have helped to keep people on track more too. I know it would be very difficult to find a common time to meet, but even a couple smaller groups would likely have been beneficial.
From what I have seen, I can tell you put in some serious time. I'm sure your students will benefit from your work.
Thanks, Rick
ReplyDeleteI would like to schedule a time with you to learn Voice Thread. I have a video set up but can't seem to get it to work for me. Maybe we can find some time during exam week. Patti
Patti,
ReplyDeleteKudos to you!!! Two classes! WOWZA! Are you for hire? I have 3 syllabi to write this summer, a self-study, and an interim to put together...you could have that all done in like a week, right? :)
Great work!
Becca
Exam week sounds like a plan. Let's plan on it.
